The Marketing Agency Boom: 2020–2024
Fifty years of agency-founding data, visualized.
Out of 37,184 agencies with a self-reported founding year in our directory, 66.6% were founded after 2015, and 48.4% in the last five years alone. The creator economy, COVID-era brand retooling, and the rise of no-code ad tooling have collapsed the cost of launching a shop - and the chart below shows exactly what that looks like.
Founded post-2015
24,777
66.6% of dated agencies
Founded 2020–2024
18,004
48.4% of dated agencies
Peak 5-year cohort
2020–24
14,642 new agencies
Methodology
- • Dataset: agencies with a self-reported founding year between 1970 and 2024.
- • Buckets: 5-year windows (e.g. “2020–24” covers 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024).
- • Survivor bias: this chart shows currently active agencies, so older cohorts undercount - agencies that shut down before being listed on Pick an Agency aren't represented.
- • Refresh: updated daily.
