The Marketing Agency Rating Inflation Problem
57% of listed agencies have a perfect 5.0 rating. 2026 data.
A buyer looking at a shortlist of agencies usually sees 4.8★, 4.9★, 5.0★ - and assumes the top one is the best. Our data across 113,954 rated marketing agencies shows the rating system is effectively broken: 65,192 agencies have a perfect 5.0/5, and 78% score 4.8 or higher. Distinguishing agencies on rating alone is statistically meaningless.
Agencies at exactly 5.0★

Agencies ≥ 4.8★

77.9% of all rated agencies
Agencies below 4.0★
3,366

Why does this happen?
- • Most agency review platforms let agencies curate which projects get reviewed, creating strong positive selection bias.
- • Reviewers are often warm clients chasing a relationship, not skeptical prospects.
- • The industry has no shared methodology - a 5.0 on one platform may average 3.9 on another.
- • Buyers end up using rating as a pass/fail filter (“above 4.5”) rather than a ranking tool.
Methodology
- • Dataset: every marketing agency on Pick an Agency with a non-null overall_rating between 1 and 5.
- • Bucketing: ratings rounded to the nearest 0.1.
